Benchmarking Revenue per MW: A Foundation for BESS Strategy in Europe

This chart shows the revenue per megawatt (MW) of installed Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that could have been achieved using a simple day-ahead market strategy over the past year. While additional revenues can be captured through ancillary services and imbalance optimization, day-ahead trading represents the baseline of the BESS revenue stack — a key metric when evaluating the fundamentals of market attractiveness.

Romania stands out with the highest Day ahead revenues, followed by Germany, Poland and the Netherlands. Belgium shows the lowest day-ahead revenue per MW (but is certainly not last in Europe)

As renewable energy penetration increases across Europe, day-ahead price dynamics and volatility will evolve — but not uniformly across countries. These differences will affect where and how storage projects can extract value, particularly for investors and developers looking to future-proof their business cases.

At Birdview Energy, we help project developers, investors, and operators navigate these changing market conditions. From building realistic revenue scenarios to supporting strategic positioning across Europe’s diverse electricity markets, we ensure your BESS assets are aligned with where the value is heading — not just where it is today
